Selecting a school for your child should not be like choosing a house or a car. You must understand the education system and the services offered by the school before making any choice. Formal education in India starts at the age of 4. A Preschool is an educational system that caters to children aged below 4. You can begin the traditional school-going process for your child as early as two years and nine months. Preschool system has two different delivery modes, namely, Kindergarten and Montessori. Kindergarten is a conventional system with more focus on reading and writing. Montessori is an application-oriented method where students learn by doing different tasks. With a change in educational perceptions, some schools have Montessori and Kindergarten.

When you select a Preschool for your child, ensure that it caters to the all-round development of the child. Children must read and write, but the focus should not be just that, instead the school must nurture fine motor skills, gross motor skills, number recognition and language skills. The school should provide overall development of the child, and it involves both the emotional quotient and intelligent quotient. A school where your child can enjoy and study will be the best school. The school doesn't have to have hot food, air-conditioned rooms and bus but it must have open spaces, pleasant staff, clean toilets. The care and concern the teachers have for the child will make all the difference. The school must follow a moral and value transferred to the child. You will have to believe in the ability of the teachers and their professionalism. It is best for the child that both parents and teachers are on the same page. Intellectual development must start at a very young age. Equal importance should be provided for moral, emotional and social development.

It will be easier to make a list of criteria you expect from a school. A score based on the list will help you choose the school. You need to decide if you want your child to pursue KG, Montessori or a combination. Once you decide, round up some schools and find a few more details like - Is the school independent or part of a chain. How close is the school from home? Does the school have a daycare facility? Does the school have classes from KG to class 12. Do they emphasise personal care? Is the school management approachable? Is the peer group from like-minded communities? Is the fee structure affordable? You must give a rating of one to five, and based on total score, make a decision.
